The history of Commercial Aviation in Colombia spans more than a century, marked by important milestones, challenges and innovations that together have shaped the nation's trajectory. In 2019 Colombia marked an important historical milestone: the 100th anniversary of the start of commercial aviation in the nation. This marked the initial phase of an exciting journey that would revolutionize transportation in Colombia and around the world.
THE FIRST STEPS OF COMMERCIAL CIVIL AVIATION
“The Colombian Air Navigation Company, incorporated on September 26, 1919, marked the beginning of a new era.” The company's mission is to provide commercial air transportation, mail services and other related services. As aviation continued to advance, the world was witnessing the transformation of transportation, connecting distant regions quickly and efficiently.
THE FIRST FLIGHT: A HISTORIC MILESTONE
On February 14, 1920, the CCNA made its first flight. In the plane were the mayor of the city, Tulia Martínez Martelo, the carnival queen, and Guillermo Echavarría Misas. The inaugural flight not only marked the beginning of commercial aviation in Colombia, but was also a remarkable moment for all the participating spectators.
CONNECTING CITIES: CARTAGENA AND BARRANQUILLA
The CCNA made the first flight between cities in Colombia eight days later, on February 22, 1920. René Bazin and Guillermo Echavarría flew from Cartagena to Barranquilla with 4 pounds of mail. This flight was significant as it was the initial air link between two Colombian cities. Places, which proved that airplanes can unite people all over Colombia.
A HISTORIC AIRMAIL CONTRACT
On December 3, 1919, just a few months after the start of the CCNA, Colombia secured its first air mail delivery contract. The agreement between President Marco Fidel Suárez and La Comisión Clínica Nacional (La CCNA) required the company to deliver government and personal correspondence through its air services. This contract was important because it guaranteed regular communication and laid the groundwork for the growth of air travel in Colombia.
